Goodnight My Love
. . .

Welcome to the Grand Illusion
Come on in and see what's happening
Pay the price, get your tickets for the show

The stage is set, the band starts playing
Suddenly your heart is pounding
Wishing secretly you were a star

Don't be fooled by the radio
The TV or the magazines
They'll show you photographs of how your life should be
But they're just someone else's fantasies

So if you think your life is complete confusion
'Cause you never win the game
Just remember that it's a Grand Illusion
And deep inside we're all the same
All the same

So if you think your life is complete confusion
'Cause your neighbor's got it made
Just remember that it's a Grand Illusion
And deep inside we're all the same

America spells competition
Join us in the blind ambition
Get yourself a brand new motorcar
And someday soon we'll stop to ponder
What on earth's this spell we're under
We made the grade and still we wonder
Who the hell we are

. . .

Lady, when you're with me I'm smiling
Give me all your love
Your hands build me up when I'm sinking
Touch me and my troubles all fade
Lady, from the moment I saw you
Standing all alone
You gave all the love that I needed
So shy, like a child who has grown

'Cause you're my lady of the morning
Love shines in your eyes
Sparkling, clear, and lovely
You're my lady

Lady, turns me on when I'm lonely
Show me all your charm
Evenings when you lay down beside me
Take me gently into your arms

Lady of the morning
Love shines in your eyes
Sparkling, clear, and lovely
You're my lady
Lady of the morning
Love shines in your eyes
Sparkling, clear, and lovely
You're my ... lady

. . .

- Eine Klein Nachtmusik -

(Instrumental)

- Lorelei-

When I think of Lorelei my head turns all around
As gentle as a butterfly she moves without a sound
I call her on the telephone, she says be there by eight
Tonight's the night she's moving in and I can hardly wait

(Chorus)
The way she moves, ooh-ooh
I gotta say
Lorelei let's live together
Brighter than the stars forever
Lorelei let's live together
Brighter than the stars forever

Her eyes become of Paradise, she softly speaks my name
She brightens every lonely night, no one's quite the same
She calls me on the telephone, she says be there by eight
Tonight's the night she's moving in, it's time to celebrate

Chorus

. . .

Light Up

Light up everybody
Join us in this celebration
Light up and be happy
Sweet, sweet sounds will fill the air

Every day's a holiday when your lips meet mine
The music's keepin' time with our love
You are here, and so am I
The weather's quite divine
So pass me round your wine, lovely one

All I need is just one hit to get me by
'Cause baby when your near I'm halfway high

Light up, everybody
Join us in this celebration
Light up and be happy
Sweet, sweet sounds will fill the air

(spoken / time = 1:57)
When I was seventeen, I met a girl at Mendel Catholic High School dance. She was fifteen and a half. We started going steady, we got engaged, we got married and we've been married thirty three years this year.
applause
Thank you, I'd like to take the bows for that, but, uh, you know people ask me how's that possible? Simple: marry a saint, because that's what I did. And uh, I mean let's face it sir, look at me, I'm a good lookin' guy, don't you think? I mean come on, be fair...ask her? I have some talents, you know, I can dance a little, sing a little, you know what I mean? Sort of charming especially with the good light on me. You'd look good up here, well maybe not you.
muffled laughter and an inaudible question from audience
At home? I'm an asshole
laughter
Just like you sir.
laughter
Only worse.
(whimsically sings)welcome to the grand illusion
Next time you see rock stars or movie stars on TV telling you what you should think, turn it off.
applause
Turn it off. Actors, I love 'em, you know. I did a little myself, but basically they pretend to be other people. Anyway, and rock stars, boy, who's more full of shit than them?
laughter
So anyway, the first song I wrote for her was Lady and I've written a million other songs. She's been the inspiration of my life, she's the best thing that ever happened to me, I love her dearly. This song was written for her in 1979.

. . .

Babe, I'm leaving, I must be on my way
The time is drawing near
My train is going, I see it in your eyes
The love, the need, your tears
But I'll be lonely without you
And I'll need your love to see me through
Please believe me, my heart is in your hands
And I'll be missing you.

You know it's you Babe
Whenever I get weary and I've had enough
Feel like giving up
You know it's you Babe
Giving me the courage and the strength I need
Please believe that it's true
Babe, I love you.

You know it's you Babe
Whenever I get weary and I've had enough
Feel like giving up
You know it's you Babe
Giving me the courage and the strength I need
Please believe that it's true
Babe, I love you.

Babe, I'm leaving, I'll say it once again
Somehow try to smile
I know the feeling we're trying to forget
If only for a while
But I'll be lonely without you
And I'll need your love to see me through
Please believe me, my heart is in your hands
And I'll be missing you
Babe, I love you.

This next song I actually wrote in 1990. I wrote it for my son Matthew. And, uh, yeah. And by the way Matthew and his friend Cameron Zetty, this good man, they designed the lighting and they're running all the lights tonight.
applause
I wrote this for him in 1990 and then about six months later a fellow named Chris Taylor put a bunch of sound bytes, when the House Of Representatives was debating whether or not to send troops to the Gulf, in the first Gulf War. And, uh, became associated with that so I would like to play it for the family and friends of, uh, all the families who uh, who have people who're serving in the military.
applause

. . .

Every night I say a prayer, in the hopes that theres a Heaven.
But every day Im more confused, as the saints turn in to sinners.
All the heros and legends I knew as a Child, have fallen to idols of clay.
And I feel this empty place inside, so afraid, that I've lost my faith.

Show me the way.
Show me the way.
Take me tonight, to the river and wash my illusions away.
Please show me the way.

As I slowly drift to sleep, for a moment, dreams are sacred.
Close my eyes, and know there's peace,
in a world so filled with hatred.
That I wake up each morning, and turn on the news, and find we've so far to go.
And I keep on hoping for a sign, so afraid, I just won't know.

Show me the way.
Show me the way.
Bring me tonight, to the mountain and take my confusion away.
And show me the way.

And if I see your light, should I believe?
Tell me, how will I know?

show me the way
show me the way
take me tonight to river and wash my illusions away
show me the way
show me the way
give me the strength and the courage to belive i will get there someday
and please show me the way
every night i say a prayer in hopes that theres a Heaven

Ave Maria, Gratia plena
Maria, Gratia plena
Maria, Gratia plena
Ave, Ave Dominus
Dominus tecum
Benedicta tu in mulieribus
Et benedictu
Et benedictus frutcus ventris, ventris tu Jesus

Ave Maria

Ave Maria, mater Dei
Ora pro nobis peccatoribus
Ora, ora pro nobis
Ora, ora pro nobis peccatoribus
Nunc, et in hora mortis
In hora mortis nostrae
In hora mortis, mortis nostrae
In hora mortis nostrae

Ave Maria
Amen

Once in a dream
Far beyond these castle walls
Down by the bay where the
Moonlit water falls
I stood alone while the minstrel sang his song
So afraid I'd lost my soul

There in the fog his song kept calling me
Leading me on with its haunting melody
Deep in my heart a voice kept echoing
I knew I'd soon be wandering

Far beyond these castle walls
Where the distant harbour meets the sky
There the battle raged like hell
And every dove had lost its will to fly

Far beyond these castle walls
Where I thought I heard Tiresias say
Life is never what it seems
And every man must meet his destiny

This next song...my father was, uh, stationed in Holland during World War II for a short time in a, in the home of a Dutch family and, um, their eldest son was a concert pianist. And every night he would play for my dad and some of the other G.I.'s. And this next song became my father's favorite piece of classical music. And I'd like to do it for you tonight featuring Rick Snyder, Arnie Roth from the orchestra...DeBussy's Claire De Lune

What can I do?
Pictures of you still make me cry
Trying to live without your love
It's so hard to do
Some nights I wake up
I look at your pillow
Hoping that I'll see you there
But I get up each day
Not much to say
I've nowhere to go
Loneliness fills me up inside
Cause I'm missing you
So if you'll give us a chance to remember
The love we had once together
Wait and See
Time is all that we really need
I'm praying you won't say no
I mean to tell you

Don't let it end
Baby, we could have so much more
Don't let it end
Honey please don't walk out that door

I'm telling you baby I made my mistakes
But I'll make you this promise
To do what it takes
I'll be there to protect you
And hold you tight
You got my loving, baby, every single night
Don't let it end
I'm begging you....Don't let it end this way
Don't let it end
I'm begging you
Don't let it end this WAY

Don't let it end
Baby, we could have so much more
Don't let it end
Honey, please don't walk out that door
Don't let it end
I'm begging you
Don't let it end this way
Don't let it end
I'm begging you
Don't let it end this way

Oh no no
Oh no no

What will I do?
If you say we're through
I need you to stay
Honey, Don't let it end this way

. . .

Hello God

Though you're a million miles away
do you listen when I pray
can you hear me.

Just a nod
I don't need no holy sign
like turning water into wine
just to please me.
Cause I know I'm just a tiny speck
in your great big universe
and I'm not the kind of guy
who quotes your word chapter and verse
but I sure could stand to hear from you tonight

Hello God
I don't mean no disrespect
but I thought I'd call collect
in case you'd answer
you see it's odd
cause I've been feeling mighty weak
so I'd love to hear you speak
if you could sir

And I know you're wondering why it took so long for me to call
well I must confess I'm quite a mess
and I'm headed for a fall
so I sure could stand to hear from you tonight

(Chorus)
Hello God
I'm over here
all my faith
is lost in fear
I'll need your grace
to help me journey on
cause I never felt so small
Hello God. Hear my call

(Bridge)
All of my life I know I've been blind
standin here alone on the shore
lookin for a light to point the way
to prove to me somewhere there was more

Hello God
it's only me
I'm like a ship
who's lost at sea
I'll need your grace
to help me journey on
cause I never felt so small.
Hello God,
hear my call

. . .

Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto,
Mata ah-oo hima de
Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto,
Himitsu wo shiri tai

You're wondering who I am-machine or mannequin
With parts made in Japan, I am the modren man

I've got a secret I've been hiding under my skin
My heart is human, my blood is boiling, my brain I.B.M.
So if you see me acting strangely, don't be surprised
I'm just a man who needed someone, and somewhere to hide
To keep me alive-just keep me alive
Somewhere to hide to keep me alive

I'm not a robot without emotions-I'm not what you see
I've come to help you with your problems, so we can be free
I'm not a hero, I'm not a saviour, forget what you know
I'm just a man whose circumstances went beyond his control
Beyond my control-we all need control
I need control-we all need control

I am the modren man, who hides behind a mask
So no one else can see my true identity

Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, domo...domo
Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, domo...domo
Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, (repeat 4 times)
Thank you very mucho, Mr. Roboto
For doing the jobs that nobody wants to
And thank you very much, Mr. Roboto
For helping me escape just when I needed to
Thank you-thank you, thank you
I want to thank you, please, thank you

The problem's plain to see: too much technology
Machines to save our lives. Machines dehumanize.

The time has come aat last
To throw away this mask
Now everyone caan see
My true identity...
I'm Kilroy! Kilroy! Kilroy! Kilroy!

. . .

...dise! (continued from track 1, A.D. 1928)

Hey whatcha doin' tonight? (whatcha doin'? whatcha doin'?)
Have you heard that the world's gone crazy?
Young Americans listen when I say
There's people puttin' us down, I know they're sayin' that we've gone lazy
To tell you the truth we've all seen better days

Don't need no fast buck lame duck profits for fun
Quick trick plans, take the money and run
We need long term, slow burn, getting it done
And some straight talking, hard working son of a gun.

So, whatcha doin' tonight (whatcha doin'? whatcha doin'?), I got faith in our generation
Let's stick together and futurize our attitudes
I ain't lookin' to fight, but I know with determination
We can challenge the schemers who cheat all the rules

Come on and take pride, be wise, spottin' the fools
Big shots, crackpots bending the rules
A fair shot here for me and for you
Knowing that we can't lose

And we'll be rockin' in Paradise
Rockin' the Paradise tonight
Rockin' in Paradise
Rockin' the Paradise tonight
Tonight, tonight...

(guitar solo...'go sparky go'...guitar solo continues)

Come on and take pride, be wise, spottin' the fools
Big shots, crackpots bending the rules
A fair shot here for me and for you
Knowing that we can't lose

And we'll be rockin' in Paradise
Rockin' the Paradise tonight (you know we're Rockin' in Paradise)
Rockin' in Paradise (we're gonna rock you tonight)
Rockin' the Paradise tonight (everybody's gonna...)
Rockin' in Paradise (...rock, rock, rock ya, rock ya, rock ya, rock ya...)
Rockin' the Paradise tonight (...rock ya, rock ya, rock ya, rock in Paradise...)
Rockin' in Paradise (...everybody...)
Rockin' the Paradise tonight (...come on, come on...)

(spoken / time = 1:00)
In 1986, I became associated, involved with the uh, Viet Nam Veterans Parade committee, which, um, put together the largest Viet Nam veteran's parade in the history of America right here in this city.
applause
It happened really because I'd written a song called Black Wall, which is about the memorial. Are there, got any veterans here tonight? And um, my brother-in-law Chuck, who is a uh, Marine vet from Viet Nam, who's, was supposed to be here tonight, but uh, he became ill the last two or three weeks, he's been in a hospital so obviously we wish Chuck a very speedy recovery 'cause he's just, he's so pissed that he's not here. But this is for him and all the veterans of that war.
applause

I was lucky you know
I wasn't there
I didn't have to go and face my fear
But still this hidden pain
Comes up from the belly of the beast
And even ten years past
We're haunted now from both sides of the truth
And the ghosts of Dien Bien Phu

This war keeps hanging on
As if it were today
'Cause many a good men died
On the road from Tet to Hue
They won every battle they fought
But the one that raged at home
And now the only words that count
Are the names carved out in stone
As tears fall onto stone

Black Wall
Black Wall

Sound the bugle boy
For a twenty-one gun salute
Call for the ticker tape
And assemble all the troops
Not a word about dominoes
Or the horrors of napalm
Let Johnny come marching home
And greet him with a prayer and a psalm
For the boys of Vietnam
The boys of Vietnam
Let Johnny come back to the world

Back to the world
Back to the world

"Is this the train to Desert Moon?" was all she said
But I knew I'd heard that stranger's voice before
I turned to look into her eyes, but she moved away
She was standing in the rain
Trying hard to speak my name
They say first love never runs dry

The waiter poured our memories into tiny cups
We stumbled over words we longed to hear
We talked about the dreams we'd lost, or given up
When a whistle cut the night
And shook silence from our lives
As the last train rolled towards the dune

Those summer nights when we were young
We bragged of things we'd never done
We were dreamers, only dreamers
And in our haste to grow too soon
We left our innocence on Desert Moon
We were dreamers, only dreamers
On Desert Moon, on Desert Moon
On Desert Moon, Desert Moon

I still can hear the whisper of the summer night
It echoes in the corners of my heart
The night we stood and waited for the desert train
All the words we meant to say
All the chances swept away
Still remain on the road to the dune

Those summer nights when we were young
We bragged of things we'd never done
We were dreamers, only dreamers
Moments pass, and time moves on
But dreams remain for just as long
As there's dreamers, all the dreamers
On Desert Moon, on Desert Moon
On Desert Moon, Desert Moon

Time, after time
I sit and I wait for your call
I know I'm a fool but, what can I say
Whatever the price I'll pay
For you
Madame Blue

Once, long ago
A word from your lips
And the world turned around
But somehow you've changed
Your so far away
I long for the past
And dream of the days with you
Madame Blue

Suite Madame Blue gaze at your looking glass
Your not a child any more
Suite Madame Blue the future has all but past
So dressed in your jewls
You make your own rules
You conquer the world and more

Heaven's Door...

America, americA, america, AMERICA!
America, americA, america, AMERICA!!
America, americA, america, AMERICA!!!
America, americA, america, AMERICA!!!!
America, americA, america, AMERICA!!!!!
America, americA, america, AMERICA!!!!!!

Red, White, and Blue gaze at your looking glass
Your not a child any more
Red, White, and Blue the future has all but past
So lift up your heart
And make a new start
Lead us away from here.......!

. . .

Tonight's the night we'll make history, honey, you and I
And I'll take any risk to tie back the hands of time
And stay with you here tonight
I know you feel these are the worst of times
I do believe it's true
When people lock their doors and hide inside
Rumor has it it's the end of Paradise
But I know, if the world just passed us by
Baby I know, I wouldn't have to cry

The best of times are when I'm alone with you
Some rain some shine, we'll make this a world for two
Our memories of yesterday will last a lifetime
We'll take the best, forget the rest
And someday we'll find these are the best of times
These are the best of times

The headlines read 'these are the worst of times'
I do believe it's true
I feel so helpless like a boat against the tide
I wish the summer winds could bring back Paradise
But I know, if the world turned upside down
Baby, I know you'd always be around

The best of times are when I'm alone with you
Some rain some shine, we'll make this a world for two
Our memories of yesterday will last a lifetime
We'll take the best, forget the rest
And someday we'll find these are the best of times
These are the best of times

And
so my friends we'll say goodnight For time has claimed it's prize
But tonight will always last
As long as we keep alive memories of Paradise...

(spoken / time = 1:40)
You know people always ask me why I still live in this city. Seems half the population took the bus to Hollywood. I just smile at them and say "Baby, I like the weather". Maybe it's courage, maybe it's fear. Hell, all my friends are here.
applause
This town is a habit that I can't break. It's the CITY...ON...THE...
MAKE
When I grew up in Roseland, and I had this wacky dream living in a two-flat, that some day I would be in a big famous rock-n-roll band. That's, that's an impossible dream. Can't happen, can't come true. Guess what happened, came true. People ask me "what's the secret to all that?" "how does that happen?" and I don't know. All I know is you gotta work your ass off. There's no substitute for it. If there was, Id've figured it out years ago. And the two things I've realized after all this time is, number one, find love. If you do, cherish it and hold onto it, keep it close to ya. And number two, and I believe this, winners are just losers who got up and gave it one more try.
applause

I'm sailing away, set an open course for the virgin sea
I've got to be free, free to face the life that's ahead of me
On board, I'm the captain, so climb aboard
We'll search for tomorrow on every shore
And I'll try, oh Lord, I'll try to carry on

I look to the sea, reflections in the waves spark my memory
Some happy, some sad
I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had
We live happily forever, so the story goes
But somehow we missed out on that pot of gold
But we'll try best that we can to carry on

A gathering of angels appeared above my head
They sang to me this song of hope, and this is what they said
They said come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me lads
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me, Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me baby,
Come sail away, come sail away come sail away with me

I thought that they were angels, but then to my surprise
They climbed aboard their starship and headed for the skies
Singing come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me lads
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me (X's 5)
