He said: "Just think it over, and write me a list,
"So we can figure out what we both deserve."
She hardly could believe it, that their love had come to this:
Dividing an' deciding his and hers.
But she grabbed a paper napkin, an' asked the waitress for a pen.
An' one by one, she wrote down what she wanted most from him.
"Honesty, sincerity, tenderness and trust.
"A little less time for the rest of the world,
"And more for the two of us.
"Kisses each mornin', 'I love you's' at night,
"Just like it used to be.
"The way life was when you were in love with me."
She reached across the table an' placed it in his hand,
An' said: "You know this isn't easy for me."
As he thought about the new car, the house an' the land,
An' wondered what that bottom line would be.
An' a thousand other things that she'd want him to leave behind,
But he never dreamed he'd open up that napkin and find:
"Honesty, sincerity, tenderness and trust.
"A little less time for the rest of the world,
"And more for the two of us.
"Kisses each mornin', 'I love you's' at night,
"Just like it used to be.
"The way life was when you were in love with me."
Well, he fought back the tears, as he looked in her eyes,
An' said: "I don't know where to start."
An' she said: "Everything on that list in your hand,
"Is hidden somewhere in your heart.
"Honesty, sincerity, just like it used to be.
"The way life was when you were in love with me."

Taking my truck, guitar, the VCR
What's left of me
Ain't no better off
Just used and simply confused
by your complexity
Cause you took my heart and my soul
and my self-esteem
All that remains to be seen, yeah
Is what's left of me
It's a mystery
You were so devastatingly beautiful
and I was briliantly naive
What's left of me
What's left of me
I'm what happens to a puppet
when somebody cuts the strings
What's left of me
I should have known I couldn't survive
on my knees at that pace
You left a catalog
of bluehangdog expressions on my face
Like a wrecking ball breaking hard
Slicker than vasoline
All and all I'm lucky to keep
What's left of me
It's a mystery
You were so devastatingly beautiful
and I was briliantly naive
What's left of me
What's left of me
I'm what happens to a puppet
when somebody cuts the strings
What's left of me
Someday I might just get back in line
That's if my nerve returns
Considering I find
What's left of me
It's a mystery
Cause you were so devastatingly beautiful
and I was briliantly naive
Taking my truck, guitar, the VCR
What's left of me

I get up like a rocket in a hurricane
Then it's off to work like a runaway train
Drivin' them nails, draggin' my tail
It don't take much to follow my trail, follow my trail
Back and forth in a game of pickle
I ain't nothing but the monkey in the middle
Walking that sideshow tight rope making ends meet
That organ grinder be in a bind without me
In that circus they work us like a bunch of borrowed mules
But everytime that music plays I know what to do
Every Friday night at the honky tonk
Me and my baby make that dive jump
When our buckles bump, I tell you what
That girl is packing some powerful stuff, powerful stuff
And when we get home she plays me like a fiddle
Makin' sweet music with the monkey in the middle
Walking that sideshow tightrope, makin' ends meet
That organ grinder be in a bind without me
In that circus they work us like a bunch of borrowed mules
But everytime that music plays sugar I know what to do
And then.
I get up like a rocket in a hurricane
Then it's off to work like a runaway train
Drivin' them nails, draggin' my tail
It don't take much to follow my trail, follow my trail
Back and forth in a game of pickle
I ain't nothing but the monkey in the middle

I've got dreams and aspirations
And I'm pretty good at conversations
I've got a heart I want to give
But I need someone to share it with
I love music and don't mind dancing
I'm easygoing, a little bit old-fashioned
I'm a sucker for sunsets, but the trouble is
I need someone to share it with
We're living all alone together
Like we don't even know each other anymore
I miss my friend, I miss my lover
We can rediscover everything that made us fall in love before
If you've got time you don't mind spending
I've got a world that feels like it's ending
Cause Baby, you're my life, but I can't live like this
I need someone to share it with
We're living all alone together
Like we don't even know each other anymore
I miss my friend, I miss my lover
We can rediscover everything that made us fall in love before
I miss my friend, I miss my lover
We can rediscover everything that made us fall in love before
'Cause I've got dreams and aspirations
And I'm pretty good at conversations
And I've got a heart I want to give
I just need someone to share it with

I'm not the man you see in all those movies
Or read about in all those fashion magazines
I won't build you monuments
Or fill your purse with rubies
Baby that's not me
But I will hold you while you're sleeping
And I will be there when you wake
And we can fill up the whole world
With all the love we make
I may never be a man of great position
Never be a new aged sensitive guy
But I will hear you every time you whisper
I'll feel it when you cry
And I will hold you while you're sleeping
And I will be there when you wake
And we can fill the seven seas
With all the love we make
Till the last day of forever
I know we'll be joined together
And I will stand by you
I'll be loving you
And I will hold you while you're sleeping
And I will be there when you wake
And we can fill up the whole world
With all the love we make
All the love we make baby
All the love we make

When I was smaller wishing I was taller
I woke up one morning and my mama was gone
I tried to talk to my father he told me not to bother him
he said boy being a man means being strong
Now leave me alone
So you say you wanna see behind the curtain
you wanna know why I don't show it when I'm hurting
It never did me any good before so long ago I locked that door
But please don't think I'm pushing you away
It's just the man I am today
Before I was loved by you I didn't know how to
Love was nothing to me but a four letter word
But I'm learning being strong don't mean being alone
So just hold on girl and soon you're gonna know
The man I'll be tomorrow
So you say you wanna see behind the curtain
you wanna know why I don't show it when I'm hurting
It never did me any good before so long ago I locked that door
But please don't think I'm pushing you away
It's just the man I am today
It never did me any good before so long ago I locked that door
But please don't think I'm pushing you away
It's just the man I am today
The man I am today

I want a woman that knows her own mind
That says whatever
Let's have a good time, have a good time
Don't live her life out of some magazine
Just a simple girl, simple dreams
Uncomplicated
One life, one love
Sounds so easy, but it's so tough
One dance only one time around
I like a truck, not too much chrome
Something kinda old
That you can still work on, still work on, and gets you back home
I take my coffee no sugar no cream
I've got a wardrobe T-shirt and jeans
Uncomplicated
One life, one love
Sounds so easy, but it's so tough
One dance only one time around
Why make it harder than it all ready is
When you can have it, have it like it is
Uncomplicated
One life, one love
Sounds so easy, but's so tough
One dance only one time around
Uncomplicated
Uncomplicated
Uncomplicated
Uncomplicated

Yeah.
If you could read my mind, you might slap my face.
If you could see inside my heart, you'd see it's in the right place.
See, it's like bunnies in a Bramble, or honey bees in a hive.
Whenever I'm beside you, that's my paradise.
Might be a twisted way of sayin', I ain't proud, an' no offence,
But I been thinkin' 'bout you, baby, in the future tense.
We'll take it slower than a broke-knee'd turtle.
Yeah, we'll get tighter than your grandma's girdle.
Oh, I want you, I need you, an' I'll never do you wrong.
If you're feelin' what I'm singin', baby: sing along.
Ain't no moonshine maker, ain't no man of the cloth.
Ain't no kangaroo lawyer, but I will get you off.
'Cause anything worth doin's worth doin' again,
An' again, an' again, an' when,
We're dancin' slower than a broke-knee'd turtle.
Gettin' tighter than your grandma's girdle.
Oh, I want you, I need you, an' I'll never do you wrong.
If you're feelin' what I'm singin', baby: yeah, sing along.
Yeah.
I want you, I need you, an' I'll never do you wrong.
If you're diggin' what I'm singin', baby: just jump on in an' sing along.
Slower than a broke-knee'd turtle.
Tighter than your grandma's girdle.
Don't say a word:
Mmm sing like a bird.
Don't say a word:
Yeah, sing like a bird.
Slower than a broke-knee'd.
Tighter than your grandma's.
Yeah.

Baby likes to stay up early,
Baby likes to get up late
She likes to spend my money,
Never leaves a thing on her plate
Yeah, yeah
Baby likes to steal the covers
And tells me she's still cold
She likes to call her mama
When I don't do what I'm told
Don't like to do what I'm told
Does she love me, whoa whoa yes she does
Does she love me, whoa whoa yes she does
Does she love me, whoa whoa yes she does
I love every thing about her,
Specially when she wants my love
I love every thing about her,
Specially when she wants my love
She's got a jealous bone
She likes me under her thumb
Keeps me in her pockets
And keeps me comin' undone
Mmmmm it's all in the name of good fun
Ain't it baby
Yes I'm her only one
I love to her say c-c-c-c-come on
It rolls right off a her tongue
Mmmmm yeah it does
Does she love me, whoa whoa yes she does
Does she love me, whoa whoa yes she does
Does she love me, whoa whoa yes she does
I love every thing about her,
Specially when she wants my love
And if she ever said goodbye
I know that I would surely die
Does she love me, whoa whoa yes she does
Does she love me, whoa whoa yes she does
Does she love me, whoa whoa yes she does
I love every thing about her,
Specially when she wants my love
Does she love me, whoa whoa yes she does
Does she love me, whoa whoa yes she does
Does she love me, whoa whoa yes she does
I love every thing about her,
Every thing about her
I love every thing about her,
Specially when she wants my love

I never thought I'd live to see you leave me
But just like the rainfall it's coming down
And something says I shouldn't try to stop
Even though I want to I just don't know how
I guess the price of your plans is worth cashing in
All our yesterdays but baby someday
I will come to you like the sweetest revelation
Like the words that you're not saying
Or a name you forgot you knew
I will come to you
Maybe in song you'll see me and realize you need me
And baby when you do I will come to you
Remember when we went from second guessers
To midnight confessors we had no fear
How it finally felt to have someone to run to
Somewhere to come to baby I'm still there
I know you'll find your way back to this place
If you follow your heart then stay where you are
I will come to you like the sweetest revelation
Like the words that you're not saying
Or a name you forgot you knew
I will come to you
Maybe in song you'll see me and realize you need me
And baby when you do I will come to you
I will come to you like the sweetest revelation
Like the words that you're not saying
Or a name you forgot you knew
I will come to you
Maybe in song you'll see me and realize you need me
And baby when you do I will come to you

I was keeping my powder dry till you did more than catch my eye
Barely wearing that mini-skirt
You looked so good it almost hurt
I said baby your've makine me crazy and you said
It's easier to get forgiveness than permission
So why wait when you know what I'm missing
We could keep on keeping our distance
Spend our whole lives wishing when it's
Easier to get forgiveness than permission
I started thinking 'bout the day we met and how lonely I'd be if I had let
My head take my heart outta asking your name
I wouldn't be loving you night and day
Oh you're so right so if you wanna hold me tight remember
It's easier to get forgiveness than permission
So why wait when you know what I'm missing
We could keep on keeping our distance
Spend our whole lives wishing when it's
Easier to get forgiveness than permission
We're not gonna do something tonight we'll regret in the morning no
'Cause we're gonna sleep till noon tomorrow
It's easier to get forgiveness than permission
So why wait when you know what I'm missing
We could keep on keeping our distance
Spend our whole lives wishing when it's
Easier to get forgiveness than permission
We could keep on keeping our distance
Spend our whole lives wishing when it's
Easier to get forgiveness than permission

I've got a picture of him barefoot in the mud
behind his grandpa's plow and two gray mules
when he turned ten years old in May of 1953
And he grew up fearing God in Washburn Tennessee
The closest thing he had to a dad was his Uncle Bob
And he could only dream of things like little league baseball
And that little boy with big blue eyes and calloused hands
became my old man
She was a Kentucky girl born on Valentine's Day
The fourth child of five to my grandma Eula May
So shy and beautiful with sunset hair and emerald eyes
her daddy spent his life working in the coal mines
Now in my eyes all my life my dad has been a saint
But even saints need angels to show them the way
Over 37 years ago he asked for Margaret Lynn's hand
And that angel married my old man
There were times I tried to buck the truthful things they said
And now I'm glad that more than once they rattled my stubborn head
My folks are just like mountains I looked at from afar
But now the closer I get to them the bigger they are
Time seems to fly anymore and the holidays are so far apart
There's no way a phone call could express what's in my heart
So this is just a song to say how thankful I am
For mama and my old man
For mama and my old man
. . .
